GREENLAND WORKSHOP

GREENLAND WORkSHOP

Teaching my first photo workshop onboard S/Y Arctic Earth, a 56 ft. aluminum-hulled arctic cruising boat designed by Ed Joy Design and Lyman-Morse, was a voyage beyond my wildest dreams. Magnus Day and Julia Princelaar, the captain and first mate, were a key component to the success of the workshop, as they guided us with ease through the epic landscape Of Greenland’s northeast coast.

Many photographers have told me that once you experience the massive landscape of the Arctic, you get hooked for more. I completely understand what they mean and consider myself fortunate to have been able to lead a photography workshop onboard S/Y ARCTIC EARTH this past year.

As most cruising sailors know, a key component to the success of a voyage relies on the people on board. Magnus Day and Julia Princelaar navigated ARCTIC EARTH attentively through the iceberg filled bays and fjords of Greenland’s northwest coast, bringing us to a new anchorage every day, while sharing their vast knowledge of Greenland and the Arctic. With almost 24 hours of sunlight, our four guests/workshop attendees immersed themselves in capturing the intense beauty of the glacial rivers and lakes, deserted whaling villages from the 1800s, icebergs, whales, and this tundra's incredible fauna and animals. My friend and colleague, journalist Polly Saltonstall, who joined the workshop, wrote an exceptional piece about our week onboard for Maine Boats Homes & Harbors which I highly recommend reading.
